I don't think Pence is deep state; I think he was Trump's 'reaching out to the significant American evangelical Christian community' - getting 'one of them' (or us in my case) to be on board with Trump. I already was on board with Trump, but this was an attempt to secure the evangelical vote. And I think it worked.
