Gamers plead for more security after deadly Jacksonville shooting

“It’s time esports events (large and small) double down on security for everyone in general and players specifically," the CEO of an esports team tweeted.

Some gamers reacting to a shooting at a Madden 19 tournament on Sunday that killed three and injured 11 had one subject on their minds in the grim aftermath — security.

Though many details about the shooting remained unclear, including how the 24-year-old suspect, David Katz, apparently entered the Jacksonville, Florida, tournament armed, people involved in the booming esports industry pleaded for more protection at such events.

In Jacksonville, Florida, Sheriff Mike Williams told reporters on Sunday that Katz, who was from Baltimore, was in town for the tournament, though it wasn't clear if he was a fan or a participant.

Asked whether the bar had security, Williams said: "I don't know. We’ll have to look at that down the road."

NRA spokeswoman calls for end to gun-free zones after Jacksonville shooting

National Rifle Association (NRA) spokeswoman Dana Loesch on Sunday called for an end or alteration to gun-free zones in the wake of a shooting at a Jacksonville, Fla. entertainment center that bans firearms on the premises.

"A horrible tragedy. End gun free zones or have the security in place to keep people safe in them," Loesch tweeted as reports emerged about a shooting at Jacksonville Landing.

The Jacksonville Landing rules of conduct bar visitors from bringing a weapon onto the property, even if it is legally owned and carried. Only law enforcement officers are exempted.

The NRA has called for an end to "gun free zones," particularly in the wake of a number of recent shootings. The organization renewed its calls for the change following a shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February, reasoning that schools should be "hardened" to protect against potential threats.

Opponents of the policy have called for stricter gun laws, with some Democrats supporting a ban on high-capacity weapons, and raising the minimum age requirement to purchase a firearm.

Iran goes to UN’s highest court over re-imposed US sanctions

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Iran went to the United Nations’ highest court Monday in a bid to have U.S. sanctions lifted following President Donald Trump’s decision earlier this year to re-impose them, calling the move “naked economic aggression.”

At hearings that started Monday at the court’s headquarters in The Hague, Tehran asked judges at the world court to urgently suspend the sanctions to protect Iranian interests while the case challenging their legality is being heard — a process that can take years.

In a written statement, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the legal move an attempt by Tehran “to interfere with the sovereign rights of the United States to take lawful actions, including re-imposition of sanctions, which are necessary to protect our national security.”
