Large earthquakes in CA, specifically, SoCal, are usually preceded by swarms of smaller of smaller quakes. Starting in about 1986 quakes of 3.0 and higher were increasing in frequency and location. Interesting note here is that San Francisco and LA are on different plates. san Francisco on the Pacific and LA on the North American.
