A republic is one of the only examples I can think of that put a higher value on something other than the self. Where fascism values the state above the individual, the individual still gets a sense of self-importance belonging to something that inflates the ego in the end.
Anything in the realm of socialism/communism can fit into this, also. People that embrace socialism/communism are emboldened by how these ideologies give every cog a participation prize to help the needy. Taxes are seized to keep the "greater good" going, and for that reason, you should pat yourself on the back, and feel important for your generous outpouring of support.
Look at how "aesthetic" Nazi Germany was. In today's age, aesthetics are highly important. Simple, yet effective designs can be all it takes to sway someone on the fence. It's a feeling of belonging that kicks in; "Well, everyone else is going this way. I'l try this, too!"

Look at the aesthetics of USSR. Works there, too. Hell, in many instances, Nazi and Soviet art/propaganda had similar styles:

Republics value patriots, not slaves. The second definition of patriot is my favorite:
a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.
Individual rights. That's one of the main things that separates a republic from the rest.
