Rouhani answers economic questions in parliament
“It should not be said we are facing a crisis. There is no crisis. If we say there is, it will become a problem for society and then a threat,” he told Parliament.
“The economic problems are critical, but more important than that is that many people have lost their faith in the future of the Islamic Republic and are in doubt about its power,” Rouhani said.
Rouhani said division between the administration and Parliament prompted some people to threaten him with assassination.
A demonstration last week saw hardline clerics waving a placard calling Rouhani’s negotiations with the West his “swimming pool.” That’s a reference to the death of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani whose dead body was found in a swimming pool.
“If I am threatened with assassination, it’s not a problem. I don’t think of it as a big deal,” Rouhani said. “We all know that it is our dream to be killed in the path of God.”
Rouhani also made a cryptic remark that Iran had a “third way” to deal with the ongoing crisis other than simply abandoning or staying in the nuclear deal. He did not elaborate, but said he mentioned the idea to French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday.
