He's part of what is known as the 'Paypal Mafia', an organisation of guys involved in datamining. Peter Thiel established Plantir Technologies, which sold technology to the CIA (it was co-funded via the CIA investment arm In-Q-Tel).

Among those technologies included 'Project Gotham' and 'Project Metropolis' (references to DC entirely intended). Readers might be reminded of the 'Sandy Hook' location in the Dark Knight Rises, as well as the CELLDAR technology used in the Dark Knight that 'Lucius Fox' (Lucifier?) protests using.

Peter Thiel donated heavily to BitCoin, along with a number of notable other big businesses (Goldman Sachs is another, I believe). It was recently proven BitCoin does NOT protect your anonymity, with about 1/6th of all wallet IDs being associated to users.

Rumour has it BTC was designed by the CIA (it's creators name reportedly translates into 'Central Intelligence'). It uses SHA256 which is an NSA creation, which given the RSA mathemagical backdoor scandal (they paid RSA to weaken their crypto with a flawed mathematical algorithm), it's very likely BTC posseses the same weaknesses.

On the ground I've seen first hand evidence of the CIA using bitcoin to money launder through Delaware shell companies, and is likely a front for their drug money laundering activities in Columbia and elsewhere.

Coinbase demands an awful lot of information about you. Under AML (Anti-Money Laundering - that's ironic) laws and 'KYC' (Know Your Customer) laws, it requires individuals submit driving licences and other identification, which is perfect for financial datamining outlets like Paypal. Likely tied to Peter Thiel.

DoE has planned to teach cryptocurrencies in schools, however Peter Thiel has financed Education Technology (read: datamining of children). Peter Thiel planned to 'disrupt' higher education.
