Chicago Cardinal Suggests Sex Abuse Allegations Are A 'Rabbit Hole,' Says Pope Has Other Priorities

Cardinal Blaise Cupich also claimed the Pope's critics are racist.

In a bizarre interview with a Chicago NBC affiliate, Cardinal Blaise Cupich, head of the Archdiocese of Chicago, suggested recent claims made by a former apostolic nuncio โ€” the Vatican's envoy to the United States โ€” that Pope Francis not only disregarded sexual abuse allegations against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, but promoted McCarrick and sought his counsel, were going down a "rabbit hole."

The Pope, Cupich told NBC, has more important things to attend to than sex abuse scandals, like climate change and immigration.

"The Pope has a bigger agenda," Cardinal Cupich said. "He's got to get on with other things, of talking about the environment and protecting migrants and carrying on the work of the church. We're not going to go down a rabbit hole on this."

The so-called "rabbit hole" is a serious one: Pope Francis is accused of ignoring evidence that McCarrick abused seminarians, instead rescinding an order from Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI that McCarrick be stripped of duties and bound at home, to live a life of "prayer and penance." The report also suggests that Pope Francis is beholden to a network of conspirators, hiding and protecting a number of abusers in the Church's hierarchy.

Cupich is named in the 11-page letter, authored by former apostolic nuncio Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganรฒ. Archbishop Viganรฒ claims that McCarrick "lobbied" for his ally, Cupich, to be named to the head of the Chicago Archdiocese โ€” a plum job โ€” and describes Cupich as "ostentatious" and arrogant."

Cupich has, in turn, been vocal to friendly media sources like The New York Times, attempting to discredit Vigano by suggesting that Vigano is trying to create a rift in the Church between traditionalists and progressives.

Neither Cupich nor the Pope, however, have addressed Vigano's central claim: that the Pope has committed serious crimes that put his stewardship of the Church into question.

To cap off his assessment of Vigano's claims, Cupich appeared to accuse the Archbishop of abject racism.

"Quite frankly," Cupich said, "they also don't like him because he's Latino."

Pope Francis is, in fact, ethnically Italian.

Iran Says It Arrested Numerous Foreign Spies Who Infiltrated Government

Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said on Tuesday that security forces had arrested "tens of spies" working in different branches of the Iranian government, according to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), a semi-official media publication in the country.

The intelligence minister did not say which countries the spies were working for nor when they were arrested, but only that many of them were dual citizens of Iran and other states.

"I have repeatedly asked people to inform us if they know any dual national. The Intelligence Ministry's anti-espionage unit has successfully identified and arrested tens of spies in different governmental bodies," ISNA quotes the minister as saying.

Maryam Rajavi, leader of the People's Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), a former US-designated terrorist organization which now enjoys deep ties to the US State Department and White House, called on Saturday for Western countries to expell "the regime's spies and mercenaries" which she argued take "advantage of diplomatic resources to promote state-sponsored terrorism."

On August 20, the US Justice Department announced charges against a California resident and Iranian citizen as well as a dual US-Iranian citizen for spying on MEK and Israeli institutions in Chicago.

The men, Ahmadrez Mohammadi-Doostdar, 38, and Majid Ghorbani, 59, are "alleged to have acted on behalf of Iran, including by conducting surveillance of political opponents and engaging in other activities that could put Americans at risk," US Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers said in a statement.

The following are the recorded proceedings of a US-Syrian meeting in the Damascus center, Mezzeh, as reported originally by generally reliable Al-Akhbar News. It relates to events which took place just this past June, and were revealed today for the first time ever.

On one of the nights of the last week of last June 2018, the Syrian security forces imposed strict measures inside and around Damascus International Airport. Just before midnight, a private UAE plane landed on one of the stands. About forty minutes passed before a huge procession of black SUVs took off carrying the passengers to the Mezzeh area, in the center of Damascus, where the new office of Major General Ali Mamlouk, head of Syriaโ€™s national security office, is located. There, a senior US officer led a delegation that included officers from several US intelligence and security agencies.

He was accompanied by the visiting American delegation, along with the head of the General Intelligence Directorate, Major General Deeb Zeitoun, and the Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Major General Mowafaq Asaad. The meeting between the two sides continued for four hours.

MORE THREATS

State Department Says US Will Respond to Chemical Weapons Use in Idlib, Syria

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) โ€“ The United States and its international partners will respond swiftly to any verified chemical weapons use in Syria and urges Russia to make the point clear to the Syrian government, Department of State spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

National Security Adviser John "Bolton has spoken to his Russian counterparts, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Chairman [Joseph] Dunford, has as well spoken to his Russian counterparts to make it very clear that the United States government and its partners will respond to any verified chemical weapons use in Idlib or elsewhere in Syria for that matter in a swift and appropriate manner,โ€ Nauert said. โ€œSo we would encourage Russia to make this point very clear to Damascus that that will not be tolerated.โ€

She added that the United States would hold also Russia or the Syrian government accountable for any offensive on Idlib or any kind of escalation in that area, especially if such efforts involve the use of chemical weapons.

Russia's Defense Ministry has warned that the leader of the Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group, which is affiliated with the Al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat Nusra terror organization (banned in Russia), is planning a chemical attack against civilians in the Syrian province of Idlib in order to provoke western nations into retaliating against Damascus.

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia told reporters on Tuesday that the warning about potential chemical attacks in Syria is based on concrete facts.

Citing reports, Nebenzia said that a number of containers with chlorine were delivered to different cities in the Syrian province of Idlib. He also said unmarked weapons were reportedly transferred to unmarked vehicles.
