I've got an 60 year old book on European History. Says the Inquisition was more of a political move than a religious event and the number of dead, though evil enough, was around 3000, not super sure of the number, but the motivation I do recall clearly.

True enough, but the implication was it was more the King than the Pope, and it was done for consolidation of political power, not for religious reasons.
