A real space program is an existential threat to the Cabal. Somebody might go off the reservation. Some group might take control of their own destiny, somewhere in the outer asteroids. With no taxation or social engineering to drag them down to the lowest common denominator, and with Nature applying harsh selection for intelligence, who knows what they would achieve? The sky would be the limit! Meanwhile, on Earth, the Cabal would rule over the hellish shithole they had created. The little people would have become Thrulls, a lesser species stuck in eternal stasis, mere sacrificial animals. But the Cabal would always wonder… At some point, when the escaped humans evolve to the next level, will they look back at Earth and see an asteroid strike as a mercy killing?
