The entire office needs to be purged from the top down.

Jerry Brown signs bill eliminating money bail in California

Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed sweeping legislation to eliminate cash bail in California. The change, which will take effect in October 2019, goes further than any other state in the country to remove money from pretrial detention.

“Today, California reforms its bail system so that rich and poor alike are treated fairly,” Brown said in a statement.

Under Senate Bill 10, California will replace bail with “risk assessments” of individuals and nonmonetary conditions of release. Counties will establish local agencies to evaluate any individual arrested on felony charges for their likelihood of returning for court hearings and their chances of re-arrest.

Several Arizona polling places closed, voting machines malfunctioning

Arizona election officials were working to fix issues with voting machines Tuesday as residents cast ballots across the state in a slew of primary elections.

Local media reported Tuesday morning that a number of polling places were closed because voting machines had not been set up, while others were experiencing problems with malfunctioning equipment.

Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes told reporters his team was made aware of technical difficulties with some machines at about 100 polling locations Monday afternoon before working with a contractor to try to address as many problems as possible. At least four voting sites remained shut Tuesday morning hours before the polls closed.

MITCHELL: As John McCain wrote in it his farewell letter to the nation, he wrote, “We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sewn resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe. We weaken it when we hide behind walls rather than tearing them down.” We now live in a stage where we had Charlottesville, we had the immigration rhetoric, the separation of children, what have the policies right now done to weaken the fabric of our country?

CARTER: I think all over the world, the United States is looked upon now with a great deal of doubt that didn’t exist a few years ago. I feel confident in America, and we’ve had some very serious problems to face in the past, with the war between the states, the Civil War, and then with 100 years of racial segregation after that. We’ve overcome those, basically. And I think that no matter what kind of setback we face right now politically, over a period of time the resilience and the basic ideals of our country will prevail, and we’ll see a correction to our mistakes.
