Catholic board seeks parishioner-led abuse investigation

A committee created by the Catholic Church specifically to prevent sexual misconduct by clergy on Tuesday issued a damning assessment of the failings to stem the abuse, calling it an "evil" caused by "a loss of moral leadership."

The National Review Board called for an investigation led by parishioners, saying a new wave of abuse scandals point to a "systematic problem" and that the bishops themselves can't be trusted to lead an investigation.

Some survivors of clergy sex abuse said the call was a disingenuous attempt by the church to get around a true independent investigation.

Judge presiding over 9/11 war-crimes case has retired

MIAMI — The slow-moving Sept. 11 war-crimes case at Guantanamo has outlasted the judge.

Army Col. James Pohl announced his retirement from the military on Monday, ending a career that culminated with his presiding over the military commission trial of five prisoners at the U.S. base in Cuba accused of planning and aiding the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Pohl has presided over the case since the May 2012 arraignment and the ensuing years of pre-trial hearings. No trial date has been set in the death-penalty case.

He was also the judge in an earlier version of the commission under President George W. Bush that was halted before trial as well as other major military cases, including the courts-martial resulting from the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal in Iraq.

There’s a reason why you haven’t heard much from Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn lately. The man who served his country honorably for 33 years has been effectively silenced by special counsel Robert Mueller as he awaits sentencing.

Given the circumstances of his plea deal, Flynn cannot speak publicly about anything related to the charges against him. Doing so could void his plea agreement with Mueller’s team and open him up to further legal proceedings that he is financially unable to defend himself against.

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow claimed this week that the plea agreement filed last week in the Southern District of New York by President Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, contains shocking language. The documents, she explained, suggest Cohen may be tied up in racketeering.

“There’s literally a line in the Michael Cohen plea agreement from last week, where federal prosecutors spell out that Michael Cohen pleading guilty in federal court last week means that federal prosecutors agree to not further prosecute him for the crimes he admitted to in court last week,” she said in a segment that I’m guessing was neither scripted nor displayed on teleprompters.
