photog wouldn't have had time to pixel peep every shot - just time to weed out bad shots, batch process curves/exposure and upload.
raw files are basically just .tif with proprietary wrappers.
you can shoot .jpg, but it's a lossy format, so any editing will result in artifacts.
stock agencies only accept raw files for this reason. the stock agency resizes for publication and charges by purchased image size and license.
