"Standing" is a legal term–it means that you have some legal interest in the matter. For instance, if someone is suing you but they really haven't proven that they have a right to do so (through a signed contract, for instance), you can attack their "standing," and the case can get thrown out.

 

It happens a lot with robo-lawsuits: corporations will sue people that don't respond, and therefore cannot attack the standing of the suing entity even though it is poorly (or not) established. They lose automatically.
