McCain didn't die a hero. That part of him was a fraud. He did nothing heroic. He got shot down and the nicest thing you can say about his imprisonment is that he found a way to survive. But that ignores his disgraceful dismissal of the over 500 POWs he not only left behind, but covered over behind a veil of secrecy. It ignores that he surrendered information that led to the deaths of numerous other airmen and soldiers in order to save his life.
The heroes died rather than betray their comrades in arms.
Nope. He didn't die a hero. He just simply died. And it took a damned long time to get there.
