I went for a walk in the park this evening, and upon looking up, I saw an object in the sky – photo related. It was a relatively large oblate spheroid, its diameter appeared to be at least 1/10th the perceived size of the moon from my perspective… the moon was not in the sky for a direct comparison, but this is my best guesstimate… about 10 times larger than a large star. At first we thought it was a child’s balloon, but it remained too stationary, and was obviously very high up because it “followed” us as we walked around the park, the way the moon appears to follow you if you walk or drive at night. This was about 7:45 pm, we watched it for a while and took some pictures with our cell phones, then went home to get my DSLR… I photographed it with my 55mm kit lens on a Nikon body (sadly, the longest lens I have with me), so not very good pictures, but the best I could do on short notice! At about 8:15 it began to get smaller, still remaining relatively stationary in the sky (there may have been a slow drift to the southeast) until it was no longer visible.

I thought this might be of interest to the anons given the fun we had yesterday shutting down satellites and supercomputers, and because I am currently located in the Salt Lake area, home to a rather infamous data center… and US Atty. Huber, for that matter.

My best guess as to its location is about 20 to 30 degrees off vertical to the southeast of Salt Lake, altitude unknown.

Any thoughts?
