dummy, an adopted son is nonetheless an heir, today, in Jewish culture 2000 years ago, and under Roman law at the same time. beyond this, Hebrews says Jesus is descended from Judah: "For our Lord was descended from Judah…" (Heb. 7:14)…not Benjamin, like some other anon said.

Even if Mary was not of the house and lineage of David, as the adopted son of Joseph Jesus was legitimately his heir, and therefore legitimately "a shoot from the stump of Jesse" (Is. 11:1.)
