When I was in college 40 years ago, I was assigned to write a paper on 1984 for English class. One part of the paper was to discuss the contemporary criticisms for Orwell's book. One stood out to me as a sign of hope: the level of surveillance described in 1984 would never really be possible. I agreed.

How wrong I turned out to be.
