The Russian mentality is so much different then western. For a German professor the adjustment would have been much easier since he has a western mentality. The Russians need sufficient time to adjust to this new mentality. Plus before 1990 there wasn't a strong Russian community in the US. It is almost like for a westerner to live in china (a little extreme comparison but you get the point).
