You're thinking of this Merkel pose. It's supposed to represent "Confidence" or "Being in control". She does it because it makes her feel that way. When POTUS does it, he's clearly in control. The fact that Merkel has to do it all the time shows you, precisely, that she's most definitely NOT in control.
Another pose of superior confidence is hands behind the back. Reminds me of Dennis Chan in Kickboxer, or Morpheus in The Matrix.
Christ's entire message was a direct relationship with God. Not through clerics, intermediaries, priests, penance, or gurus. Some mean well, and help others develop a personal relationship with God, sure. However, any system setup to prevent us from having a DIRECT relationship with God is a corrupt one.
