Seems to me they seek to help the brotherhood, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for an esoteric school working to help those who are seeking enlightenment, or the experience of living on another level/directed from above, so to speak.
However, having been infiltrated at the highest levels, like any other power center the lower levels can be used by the higher levels for nefarious purposes - even the opposite of what was set out to be achieved by the founders.
