Bayer's Monsanto: 8,700 lawsuits over glyphosate

Bayer AG (BAYN.XE) said Wednesday that as of Aug. 27 it faces around 8,700 lawsuits related to Monsanto's glyphosate weed-killer products, compared with around 8,000 at the end of July.

The majority of plaintiffs have brought actions in state courts in Missouri, Delaware and California, while the remainder were filed in various federal courts, Bayer said.

In August a California state court ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million in damages to groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson after the jury decided that the company's products likely contributed to Mr. Johnson developing terminal cancer.

Bayer, the share price of which plunged after the verdict, has disputed the court decision and is filing post-trial motions ahead of a potential appeal.

The company didn't detail projected legal costs but said that Monsanto had "appropriate accounting measures" in place.

Monsanto also has standard insurance against statutory liability claims, Bayer said.
