Transcript of My Own Principles
Mary Louise Alcott
“To live for one’s principles, at all costs, is a dangerous speculation; and the failure of an ideal, no matter how humane and noble, it’s harder for the world to forgive and forget than bank robbery or the grand swindles of corrupt politicians.”
My Opinion
While I very much believe in Alcott's statement, people do contradict themselves to fit in to society. I feel that people should stand by what they believe in, regardless of the affect it may have on their place in society.
My Principles
In my live, I have followed what society thinks. But most of the time,I follow what I truly believe in. It is just the way my parents raised me. A big principle I have is honesty. I will always tell the truth because even if it may hurt, it cannot hurt more than a lie will. Utopians have the faith that God will help them in times of need, I used to have that principle as well. Now I just feel that you yourself should find a way to fix things. If you do not help yourself, who will?
What does it mean?
Alcott's statement is showing that people will go against or just not follow their own principles in order to fit in to society. People would rather look good to everyone else rather than live by what they feel is right.
