Delta Fire now 2,000 acres, I-5 closed and immediate evacuations in place

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Update as of 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5:

Northbound I-5 has been closed at Fawndale Road and southbound has been closed at Mott Road due to a fire burning on both sides of the highway.

Officials said everyone north of Vollmers/Delta to the Siskiyou County line are being evacuated.

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office said the fire is burning so badly on both sides of I-5 that they've requested assistance from Siskiyou County. Units are not able to get in to evacuate people so if you are in these areas, evacuate now.

The U.S. Forest Service said full aircraft and ground response has been ordered. Several other fire agencies are also responding including Cal Fire and the Redding Fire Department.

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office added several motorists have been rescued from I-5 and one was transported with injuries.
