State determines its only ‘unsatisfactory’ dam is Oroville’s

OROVILLE — The state Department of Water Resources has determined that Oroville Dam, which is under reconstruction, is the only dam in the state's jurisdiction that is in "unsatisfactory" condition. The status of state-owned dams is assessed annually by the Division of Safety of Dams, which is a branch of DWR. The state has 1,246 dams under its jurisdiction.

Police search home of couple accused of stealing money from homeless veteran

Authorities on Thursday searched the home of Katelyn McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico, a couple who have been accused of taking money intended for a homeless veteran.

Burlington County, N.J. prosecutor Scott Coffina, confirmed to NBC News that there is also a search warrant out for the two. He added that no charges had been filed yet.

The couple raised over $400,000 for John Bobbit, a homeless veteran, after he gave money to McClure to help her buy gas.

But Bobbit has filed a lawsuit against the couple, alleging that they engaged in fraud and had misspent the funds. He told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the couple recently bought a BMW as well as vacations in Las Vegas and Florida with the money they had raised.

McClure and her boyfriend said they did not use the money in an interview with NBC's Megyn Kelly last week. They alleged that Bobbit spent some of it on drugs and that they were withholding the rest.

McClure and D'Amico are ordered to appear in depositions next week to explain what happened to the money, according to the report.

The judge in the lawsuit also said she wants to speak to the couple about what happened to the funds.

Dems urge Mattis to reject using $450M for border wall

Four top House Democrats are urging the Pentagon to reject a request from the Department of Homeland Security to use $450 million to build border wall at a military range in Arizona.

“In countless hearings and briefings this year we have heard from senior civilian and military leadership on the readiness challenges our military currently faces,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Defense Secretary James Mattis publicly released Thursday. “With that in mind, we fail to see how diverting $450 million away from efforts to rebuild military readiness is in the department or the taxpayers’ best interests.”

The letter was signed by Reps. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee; Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee; Peter Visclosky (D-Ind.), ranking member of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee; and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), ranking member of the House Appropriations military construction and veterans affairs subcommittee.

Frustrated that Congress has not funded his proposed wall on the southern border, President Trump first raised the possibility of using Pentagon funding for the wall in March.

Shortly afterward, a Pentagon spokeswoman confirmed the department was looking at the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range as a possible place to build a stretch of wall. The land is a bombing range near the Mexico–U.S. border in Wellton, Ariz.
