Damascus has sovereign right for Idlib operation: Syrian UN envoy

Syria’s Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari says military operations against terrorist factions in the militant-held province of Idlib are a sovereign right of the Arab country and liberating the northwestern region “will be the last nail in the coffin of terrorism.”

Addressing a Friday United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss the expected military operation in Idlib, Jaafari further said Damascus' right to launch the offensive is also guaranteed by international law, the UN Charter, and Security Council resolutions on counter-terrorism.

He added that the Idlib operation would be a response to the demand of millions of Syrians, including the people of Idlib who are besieged by terrorists.

Jaafari also said that certain sides’ defense of terrorists in Idlib is a desperate attempt to protect the militants and “extend their expiration date” so that they can transport and present them as “very moderate opposition” in other countries.

With the help of Iran, Russia and Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement, the Syrian army is preparing for the Idlib operation, a strategically-important region bordering Turkey and close to the coastal Latakia province.

Idlib also hosts Turkish-backed militants fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Turkey, whose army has a string of observation posts around the edge of the militant area, has warned against such an offensive.

Daniel Ortega tells the US ‘do not mess with Nicaragua’

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has called on the United States to respect the country’s sovereignty and set aside its interventionist policies, local press reported on Thursday.

“What do we say to the United States of America? We say that if they want to help the Nicaraguan people, if they want to contribute to peace, the best they can do is not get involved with Nicaragua, respect Nicaragua,” said the president in a speech, published in its entirety on TN8 channel website.

The president made his speech at the close of a walk for peace in the country. Ortega said that “interventionist policies, what they cause is more pain, more suffering in Nicaraguan families.”

“So we tell the US governors, we tell the US Congressmen, we tell him that if they want to contribute to the peace of Nicaragua, that they respect Nicaragua as a sovereign nation, as a nation worthy, as a nation, like any nation in the world, deserves respect and you must respect,” he said.

On September 5, at a United Nations Security Council session to analyze the situation in Nicaragua, US ambassador Nikki Haley said the Latin American country “is following the path of Syria and Venezuela.”

For four months, Nicaragua has been experiencing a crisis caused by a series of US-backed opposition protests that have led to violent clashes between protesters and security forces.

This comes as Nicaragua struggles to maintain its sovereignty outside the orbit of the American Empire. This is the same independence stance that Venezuela and Syria have also taken, which has mean both countries have faced US-backed destabilization, and in the case of Syria, a full blown imperialist war of aggression. Thus far, both Venezuela and Nicaragua have avoided their respective countries descending into a war like situation, despite similar models of media propaganda working the same way as it did to demonize Syria.

Syrian general: Israel always attacks Syrian Army to defend jihadist allies

The latest Israeli attack on the Syrian province of Hama was made with US interests who had day before had expressed concern about the impending operation in Idlib, Syrian retired general Yahii Suleiman said.

“This is not the first such attack: whenever the army prepares an operation against armed groups, Israel attacks. The last time, this happened before the army attack in the south of the country,” the Syrian general explained .

He noted that the Israelis are nervous because the Syrian Army is now very close to the border of the Zionist-occupied Golan Heights which legally belongs to Syria, so they attack to give a warning. Despite this, the army continues to successfully attack the militants and liberate all new territories of Syria.

Suleiman stressed that statements about the presence of Iranian forces and equipment in Syria are only an excuse to attack.

“On the basis of the information I have and the simple logic, I say that there are no Iranian military forces in the territory of Syria, only unarmed advisers. This is a very common practice in accordance with the cooperation agreements that have been concluded between our countries. If there are Iranian military forces in Syria, we would have reported, there is nothing reprehensible about it,” he said.

On September 4, Syria’s anti-aircraft defense repelled the Israeli Air Force’s attack, knocking down five missiles, the Syrian news agency SANA reported.

“Syrian air defense has knocked down several missiles fired by Israeli airplanes in the Wadi al-Uyun region, near Hama,” the agency said.

In addition, several explosions have been reported in the area. According to medical reports, one person died and four were injured as a result of the incident.

Previously, Israel repeatedly attacked targets in Syria. In particular, the Israeli military attacked “several” armed terrorists in the border region of Syria on August 2. The incident occurred in the southern part of the Syrian-controlled Golan Heights, where ISIS had previously operated.

Syria and Israel have been formally at war since 1973, but armed clashes were extremely rare before the start of the imperialist war against Syria.

Number of Palestinians Injured in Clashes in Gaza Grows to Almost 400

GAZA STRIP (Sputnik) – The number of Palestinians who were injured in clashes with Israeli troops on the borders of the Gaza Strip has grown to 395, while one person was killed, spokesman for the Gaza Health Ministry Ashraf Qedra told Sputnik on Friday.

Earlier in the day, local health authorities said that almost 100 Palestinians were wounded and one was killed.

"A Palestinian minor was killed in the east of the Rafah city, and 395 Palestinians were injured at the eastern borders of the Gaza Strip on Friday… Out of those wounded, 147 Palestinians were sent to hospital," Qedra said.

Tensions between the Israelis and Palestinians near the Gaza border have been mounting since late March, which marked the beginning of the Great March of Return. The recent disturbances on the Israeli-Gaza border have been caused by continued shelling and the release of arson balloons by Hamas militants into Israel.

The clashes have already left at least 170 Palestinians dead and about 18,000 others injured.
