Woods Anon here.
Most birds sing at dawn.
(I suspect because the worms are out in the morning dew and it's good eatin' time.)
A few, like the nightingale, sing at night.
Never hear birds as a storm approaches.
Yet they tweet up a storm after it has passed.
Some start squawking when there is something big approaching where they roost, like a bear or a coyote.
Others caw, like a hawk.
There are doves that coo, their sound is mournful.
Never actually heard a hummingbird's call, but their wings make a buzzing sound. In fact, you might mistake them for a big bug if you'd never seen one before.
Once I made the mistake a mimicking an owl call. It swept down in front of me so fast its wing brushed my face. Never did that again.
Turkeys don't quite make a gobble sound, but close.
Of course ducks quack and geese honk.
I've heard tell a bird sings when it's caged. But I don't know any caged birds.
So I wouldn't know.
