Louisiana City’s Recreation Department Bans Nike Purchases
The mayor of a Louisiana city issued a memorandum on Wednesday demanding that the city’s recreation department ban purchases or deliveries of Nike products.
The Times-Picayune reported Sunday that Kenner Mayor Ben Zahn, a Republican, issued the September 5 memo to Recreation Director Chad Pitfield, stating that all booster club purchases of athletic equipment or clothing at city athletic facilities must have Pitfield’s approval, effective immediately.
“Under no circumstances will any Nike product or any product with the Nike logo be purchased for use or delivery at any city of Kenner recreation facility,” the memo states.
The memo was shared thousands of times on Facebook as part of the latest wave of protests and boycotts against Nike for using former-NFL player and national anthem-kneeling activist Colin Kaepernick as spokesperson for its latest “Just Do It” ad campaign.
Kaepernick, an ex-NFL player for the San Francisco 49ers, became famous in August 2016 for kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality.
“Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything,” Kaepernick says in the ad, which features stories from athletes who overcame disabilities or injuries to succeed.
But some Democrats were irked by Mayor Zahn’s decision to boycott Nike. One Democrat city councilman released a statement saying he was against the mayor’s decision to boycott Nike.
“I was not made aware of this decision beforehand and it is in direct contradiction of what I stand for and what the City of Kenner should stand for,” Kenner Councilman Gregory Carroll wrote on Facebook. “I am 100% AGAINST this decision. I will meet with the Mayor and other Council members in an effort to rescind this directive.”
Despite some Democrats’ objection to the city’s boycott, many other institutions have dropped Nike as an athletic uniform supplier to boycott the company for using Kaepernick as a spokesperson for Nike’s brand.
The College of the Ozarks, a Christian college in Missouri, announced Wednesday it would be dropping Nike as a uniform supplier over the company’s decision to promote a spokesperson who disrespected the national anthem.
Liberty University announced Friday it was in the market for a new athletic uniform supplier after the Nike ad, stating that it wants a supplier which supports the U.S. flag, law enforcement, and American values.

According to RT, the Russian military has obtained “irrefutable” data that terrorist groups, including Jabhat an-Nusra, and the infamous White Helmets met in Idlib province on Sunday, according to the ministry’s spokesperson Igor Konashenkov.
The militants plotted the final scenarios for the chemical attacks that the Syrian army are expected to make in the cities of Jisr ash-Shugur, Serakab, Taftanaz and Sarmin, the Russian military revealed.
“Full readiness of all participants involved in the staging of the provocations is be ensured by the evening of September 8,”Konashenkov stated. He added that the terrorists are to receive a “special” signal from some “foreign friends of Syrian revolution” to launch the operation.
The statement comes after earlier warnings from Moscow’s that militants are preparing to stage a chemical attack in the Syrian province to give the Western coalition a pretext to strike Syria. In August, the Defense Ministry said that eight canisters of chlorine had been delivered to a village near Jisr al-Shughur city, and that a foreign-trained group of militants had also arrived in the area to simulate a rescue operation after the staged attack.
The US and its allies have repeatedly stressed its readiness to strike Syria if any attack takes place, ignoring all Russia’s warnings. Washington’s envoy to the UN Nikki Haley recently said that she already knows the perpetrators in case a chemical incident takes place in Syria.
In late August, American forces deployed missile destroyer USS ‘Ross’ to the Mediterranean and USS ‘The Sullivans’ to the Persian Gulf. The preparation of US military forces was condemned by Russia, with its Defense Ministry describing the move as “the latest evidence of the US intention” to take advantage of a false-flag attack.

Swedish Moderate opposition leader urges PM & his center-left government to resign
Swedish Moderates’ leader, Ulf Kristersson, whose opposition center-right bloc virtually tied with the ruling center-left coalition has urged PM Stefan Lofven and his government to resign.
"This government has run its course… Now it should resign,” Kristersson told a party rally, after preliminary election results showed his opposition coalition in a tie with its centre-left rivals.
Kristersson, who is the center-right Alliance’s candidate for prime minister, said that the election results have shown their rivals are “unlikely” to find enough support in parliament, and that he will hold discussion with partners on how to form a new Swedish government.
Earlier, the leader of the anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats, Jimmie Akesson, indicated he was ready for potential coalition talks, but challenged Kristersson to choose between seeking support from his party and PM’s Social Democrats.
"We increase our seats in parliament and we see that we will gain huge influence over what happens in Sweden during the coming weeks, months and years," Akesson told a party rally, adding that he was ready for cooperation will all parties, especially the center-right.
However, both of the main parties have previously said that they will not form a coalition with Akesson's faction, meaning that a minority government, grand coalition or prolonged political crisis are all on the table.
The leader of Sweden's Liberal Party, Jan Bjorklund, reiterated his rejection of any cooperation with SD. “I want an Alliance government, but it will not happen in cooperation with the Sweden Democrats," Bjorklund said Sunday.

Germany May Join Possible Western Airstrikes on Syria - Reports
Germany may join possible airstrikes on Syrian government forces by western nations in case of chemical weapons use by Damascus, according to local media.
German Defence Ministry has been mulling mulled joining possible airstrikes by the United States, the United Kingdom and France against the Syrian government forces, Bild reported. The ministry is considering the option in case of possible chemical weapons use in Syria, which they presume will be carried out by the Syrian government troops, the outlet said.
Earlier in the day, French Minister for the Armed Forces Florence Parly said that if chemical attacks are carried out in Syria, response will follow, including those from France.
The US Department of State spokesperson Heather Nauert also said earlier in a press briefing that the United States and its international partners will respond swiftly to any verified chemical weapons use in Syria.
Previously, Russian Defense Ministry warned that the leader of the Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group, which is affiliated with the Al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra terror organization (banned in Russia), was planning a chemical attack against civilians in the Syrian province of Idlib in order to provoke western nations into retaliating against Damascus.
Idlib province is currently a remaining stronghold of the insurgency in Syria. The province was seized by the Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (also known as al-Nusra) terror group in 2015. The Syrian government allowed radicals who surrendered in the city of Aleppo, in the Homs province and in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta to leave for Idlib.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump urged the Syrian government as well as Russia and Iran to prevent the Syrian army's possible offensive in Idlib, saying that would be "a grave humanitarian mistake" and that "hundreds of thousands of people could be killed".
