Another intriguing find is that no online dictionary acknowledges that there is any etymological background to the surname "Payseur."

The French etymological dictionaries(https://www.filae.com/nom-de-famille/ https://www.geneanet.org/nom-de-famille/PAYSEUR ) do not recognize the name as even existing, never mind having a history

Ancestry.com recognizes its geographic beginning in the US in South Carolina and lists variants of the name (including VASSER). and US online recognizes its geographic existence in Carolina, but not its etymology ( historical meaning): "Name meaning: French: Unexplained (!).

If you look at it, though its meaning couldn't be clearer:

pays = country, countries or land, lands ( one of the few French words that is spelled the same in the singular and plural forms)

seur = corruption of Sieur ( from whence we get Sire and Sir), itself a corruption of Seigneur = Lord
