Ben Sasse: I think about leaving the GOP ‘every morning when I wake up’

GOP Sen. Ben Sasse (Neb.) confirmed to the media on Sunday that he mulls leaving the Republican Party almost every day, after tweeting last week that he “regularly” considers becoming an independent.

What are the details?

On Saturday, Twitter user Stephanie Pickens brought up the issue to Sasse, posting to his feed: “I switched my party from Democrat [to] no-party this week as I see that to be part of the solution. Have you considered following suit?”

Sasse responded, “Yep — regularly consider it. (Except the ‘from Dem’ part).”

On Sunday, Sasse expressed his disdain for both the Democratic and Republican parties to CNN’s “State of the Union” anchor Jake Tapper.

“I’ve been saying for a long time that these parties need to reform and have a future-focused vision, and we’re not there yet,” he told the host.

“Why stay a Republican? And when’s the last time you thought about becoming an independent?” Tapper asked.

Sasse admitted, “I probably think about it every morning when I wake up and I figure out, why — why am I flying away from Nebraska to go to D.C. this week? Are we going to get real stuff done?”

The senator added that he is “committed to the party of Lincoln and Reagan as long as there’s a chance to reform it. But this party used to be for some pretty definable stuff. And, frankly, neither of these parties are for very much more than being anti.”

Sasse then hit out at the Trump administration, telling the host, “It’s pretty obvious when you are engaging with the White House, as I do many, many times a week, there is a lot of chaos and a lot of reality TV circus and that is different than a long-term view.”

Sen. Sasse told Tapper that the 2016 election was a “dumpster fire,” saying, “Both (Trump and Hillary Clinton) went into the election mostly being against the other one, and the American people basically said, ‘A pox on your houses,’ and then they decided who to vote for who was less bad, in their view.”

“We shouldn’t have elections like that in the future,” Sasse added.

Responding to whether or not he would challenge President Trump in 2020, Sasse said, “I think the odds are a lot higher that I run for the Noxious Weed Control Board of Dodge County, Nebraska, than that.”

Horrifying Video Shows Israeli Soldiers Shoot, Kill 16yo Boy While His Hands Were In The Air

A teenage Palestinian boy had his hands in the air and was standing far away from the Israeli soldier who shot and killed him.

Gaza – A disturbing video was posted online this week that shows the moments before a 16-year-old Palestinian boy was shot down by Israeli soldiers while he stood in a field, with his hands in the air.

The boy has been identified as Ahmed Masabah Abu Tuyur, and he was pronounced dead on Saturday morning, as a result of the injuries he sustained from the shooting on Friday, according to a report from Haartz. The shooting reportedly occurred during a protest, and Abu Tuyur can be seen picking up a rock off of the ground and hurling it into the air.

In the video, it does not appear that the rock thrown by Abu Tuyur hit anything or harmed anyone, and the boy can be seen standing with his hands in the air for approximately 10 seconds before he is shot once and he collapses to the ground.

Some viewers would argue that because Abu Tuyur picked up a rock and threw it into the air, he was armed and posed a threat to the Israeli soldiers who appear to be perched on top of a sand dune. However, that logic begs the question—how is a boy with a rock a legitimate threat to a trained sniper with a gun, especially when there are a few hundred feet between them?

A 17-year-old Palestinian boy was also shot and killed by live fire from the Israeli Military, and he has been identified as Bilal Mustafa Khafaja. More than 7,000 people took part in the demonstration on Friday, according to reports from the Gaza Health Ministry, and the injuries included at least 64 people who were hit with tear gas and 30 people who were wounded by live fire.

The protest was a part of Gaza’s weekly March of Return on the Gaza-Israel border, and as Telesur noted, the Palestinians who take part in the demonstration are calling for “the end of the brutal decade-long Israeli blockade as well as demanding the return of Palestinian refugees to their lands and homes in Israel, a right granted for them by the United Nations.”

Another issue that Palestinians are protesting is the Trump Administration’s recent decision to end funding for a United Nations agency that has provided assistance to millions of Palestinians over the years. The U.S. has been contributing an average of $350 million a year to the agency since 2010 and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, reportedly led the charge to cut ties for political reasons.

As The Free Thought Project has reported, while Israel’s rules of engagement allow sniper fire on anyone who is within 100 meters of their border fence, as long as the snipers claim that they believe the individual’s intent was to “penetrate Israeli territory,” several of the people shot and injured during demonstrations in recent months were women, children, journalists, and paramedics.

Yaser Murtaja, a Palestinian photojournalist, was wearing a jacket that clearly said “PRESS” when he was shot in the chest and killed by an Israeli sniper in April. As The Intercept noted, “Either the Israeli sniper could not clearly see who was in the rifle scope—in which case the claim that the use of live fire is precise is shown to be untrue—or the soldier intentionally fired at a journalist, which is a war crime.”

While there are Palestinians who claim that Israel has no right to exist, there are Israelis who say the same thing about Palestine. A documentary from Empire Files released in October 2017 showed that a number of Israeli citizens support their government’s occupation in the Gaza Strip, and believe the land is rightfully theirs to own.

As a report from Amnesty International noted, Israel “maintains an illegal air, sea and land blockade on Gaza and maintains a so-called ‘access-restricted area’ or buffer zone within Gaza. These have cut off more than 2 million Palestinians from other parts of the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the outside world for 10 years.”

Israel’s blockade on Gaza has been made possible by the funding and support of the United States, which has continued to block calls for an independent investigation into Israel’s actions. Ahmed Masabah Abu Tuyur is just one of the dozens of Palestinians who have been killed by Israeli Forces for protesting in recent months.

Sweden Vote: International Election Observer ‘Shocked’, ‘Never Seen Such an Undemocratic System’

After the first time a Swedish election has been monitored by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), observers have expressed “shock” at the nation’s “undemocratic” system.

Danish delegate Michael Aastrup Jensen, who has previously monitored elections in Russia and Eastern Europe, told Berlinske: “In all the many election observations I’ve been on, I have not seen anything that comes close to how undemocratic the Swedish voting system is.”

The foreign policy spokesman for Denmark’s liberal governing party Venstre, Jensen said the major issue with the Swedish election system is the lack of privacy for citizens casting their ballot.

Separate parties have separate ballot papers in Sweden, the choosing of which takes place in public, as voters must select their preferred ballot papers before placing them into a ballot box.

“It is just so far beneath anything remotely resembling European election standards, or anything we would allow even in Eastern Europe,” he said.

Crime Wave Britain: Six Police Officers Stabbed, Rammed, Run over in 72 Hours

Attacks against police officers are increasing amid a violent crime wave in Great Britain, with six officers injured in one force area over a three-day period.

West Midlands Police covers a wide geographical area which includes Birmingham, Britain’s multicultural second city, and Wolverhampton, the former seat of the late anti-mass migration campaigner Enoch Powell.

The first officer to be attacked was stabbed during an attempted carjacking while off-duty on September 5th, in a shocking scene captured on CCTV.

A hooded man clad in black is said to have approached the 25-year-old officer in Walsall in the middle of the day at 1:30 pm and demanded his car keys, chasing him down and stabbing him in the chest several times when he tried to run.

Carrying firearms, pepper spray, or any other article for self-defence is prohibited in the United Kingdom, even for off-duty police officers and members of the Armed Forces — with the exception of Northern Ireland.

The remaining five officers were injured in the line of duty over a period of only a little over 24 hours.

The most serious incident involved a 50-year-old female officer who was run down by a car at 9 in the morning on September 6th, also in Walsall, while trying to diffuse a domestic situation.

The officer was hospitalised with a serious head injury, punctured lung, and broken ribs.

Another officer had been injured in a vehicle attack only hours beforehand, suffering neck and back injuries when his patrol car was rammed repeatedly and badly damaged by a van after he had pursued a suspected shop robber in Strechford.

The morning before that, three armed officers had been injured in a similar incident, when a suspected stolen car they had pulled over lurched backwards into one of them as he approached the vehicle, leaving him with a broken ankle. The officers inside the patrol vehicle then suffered whiplash injuries when the car proceeded to ram them.

West Midlands Police Assistant Chief Constable Chris Johnson praised the bravery and service of the officers involved in the incidents, saying they “highlight once again the dangers our brave officers face every day… they put themselves in harm’s way to deal with dangerous situations.”

Papadopoulos told the liberal anchors about how he was set up by Obama spy Stephan Halper in London after he was brought on by the Trump campaign.

George Papadopoulos: I received an unsolicited email from Stephan Halper who I thought was a Cambridge professor inviting me. So he reached out and said I want you to write a paper for me. I joined him about a week later over drinks at the hotel in London where all of the sudden he pulls out his phone. Everyone has phones when they meet with me and he places it in front of him and he begins to tell me, “So George, of course hacking is in the interest of your campaign. Of course, the Russians are helping you.” These open-ended questions, and, “Of course, you’re probably involved in it too. That’s correct right?”

Papdopoulos added that Halper began to sweat and his demeanor changed when George told him he had “no idea what you’re talking about” as far as hacking and Russians.

While defending her comments urging her followers to harass members of the Trump administration, Rep. Maxine Waters mocked the controversy by saying that she threatens the president’s supporters “all the time.”

The remarks came during a speech last weekend, while she was receiving the Hero Award from the Stonewall Young Democratic Club of Los Angeles.

“I did not threaten [Trump] constituents and supporters. I do that all the time, but I didn’t do that that time,” Waters said, addressing her comments from June and prompting laughter from the crowd.

Waters also expressed dismay that her call for harassment was seen by many as a call for political violence.

“What bothered me so much was, they tried to frame that as violence. That’s not violence,” Waters said. “The poster child for violence is the president of the United States. He’s the one who threatens. Don’t forget at his rallies, when he said go ahead and beat them up, I’ll take them out on a stretcher.”

Waters explained that she doesn’t want violence, just incivility and protesting.

“I do not advocate violence. I do not believe you should hit, kick, shoot,” the kooky representative added. “We have to tell people the difference between violence and incivility and protesting.”

“I said, if you see them anywhere, if you see them in a restaurant, if you see them in a department store, even at a gasoline station, just tell them, you’re not welcome here or anywhere,” Waters explained. “Of course it frightened a lot of people.”
