Australian newspaper The Herald Sun is eviscerated for racist cartoon of US Open Final which depicts Serena Williams as a baby and Naomi Osaka as white
The cartoon was published by the Melbourne-based newspaper on Monday
In it, Williams' nose and lips are enlarged and her curly hair is exaggerated
Naomi Osaka, 20, her Haitian-Japanese opponent, is depicted as white with straight, blonde hair
Among critics who slammed the cartoon was J.K. Rowling who said it 'reduced' Williams to 'sexist and racist tropes'
Others said the image was reminiscent of Jim Crow-era illustrations of African American women
The newspaper hasn't responded to the backlash
On witter cartoonist Mark Knight defended himself, saying 'Don’t bring gender into it when it’s all about behaviour'
