Hey EMP-anon - couple threads back. Thank you for posting these sources and papers. This is some good reading.
While I still believe the threat from EMP is vastly overblown (and a waste of Tritium - why try to put your enemy in the dark - and risk failure? - when you can just wipe em out) -
I deeply respect that you have posted sources and links. I am very open to being wrong - but I have personally worked on hardened equipment. Transorbs, arresters, TVS diodes and simple faraday shielding (and solid engineering) is all you need to invalidate EMP effects.
Gamma/ cosmic rays can certainly flip bits while equipment is running (and can penetrate shielding) - but I dont even want to think about the amount of gamma radiation it would take to generate the electron-hole pairs and produce a high enough current to damage shielded / inert devices and modules (e.g equipment spares stored in shielded boxes). Biologicals will come apart long before the transistors will with that amount of radiation.
Small scale microwave/ directed energy devices may be useful against tactical targets - especially unshielded targets with exposed antennae. But the doomsday EMP poof - we are back to the 1800s scenario is unrealistic. Although its still more likely than a flat earth. Flat earthers should be spaced and/or shot into the sun purely on principle.
