So..if a storm is moving at 12 mph but the swell is going at least twice as fast, the swell would get there a lot sooner. A huge storm like that would have corresponding surf and it would likely be there already as the storm has been pointing towards SC/NC for a long time. This is Hurricane Isaac, CAT 1.
