In reading a few reports of WTC construction and its collapse I was surprised to learn just how insubstantial the tower construction seems to have been. The floors were 10cm thick, mostly lightweight concrete laid on a corrugated steel platform, supported by trusses. Vertical columns were fireproofed with a 5cm layer of sprayed concrete (with ceramic or asbestos fibres in it I think) and another 5cm of vermiculite plaster. I don't know why but I just imagined the floors would have been more substantial.
