General Instructions
The instructions for Schedule RC-R should be read in conjunction with the capital guidelines issued by
the reporting bank’s primary federal supervisory authority. Under the banking agencies' risk-based capital
guidelines, assets and credit equivalent amounts of derivatives and off-balance sheet items are assigned
to one of several broad risk categories according to the obligor, or, if relevant, the guarantor or the nature
of the collateral. The aggregate dollar amount in each risk category is then multiplied by the risk weight
associated with that category. The resulting weighted values from each of the risk categories are added
together, and generally this sum is the bank's total risk weighted assets which comprises the denominator
of the risk-based capital ratio.
