His aunt was a microbiologist studying in Germany in 1914 when war broke out. After the USA invaded Germany she was imprisoned by the Americans and sent to a prison camp in the USA because Russia was still an enemy and did not sign the Armistice. In the USA she joined the American Communist party, then ended up in Chicago where she taught microbiology at a college affiliated with the University of Chicago, Then in 1921 she returned to the Soviet Union.
The Brin clan had it good in the Soviet Union until the beginning of the war in 1942 when ethnic Russians in the Communist party turned against the Jews and they became enemies of the people. It was under the leadership of Russians, Georgians, Ukrainians that the Soviet Union pushed out the forces of the 3rd Reich. The underlying reversal of Jewish fortunes has not really been covered by historians, partly because of all the chaos during that time.
Jews ran the Bolshevik party, the Russian Revolution and the Communist Party aparatus until their control started to slip after the 3rd Reich invaded.
