Could that be an occulting disc located AT the observatory that is used to block out parts of the solar disc in order to observe the unblocked portions?

Would be nice if somebody would sauce the pix. Where you got it.

well why is there a thin blue line encircling the black area in that picture? Not precisely lined up with the edge of the black but near. Looks like a computer generated blue line. What is its purpose.

 

I know that when eclipses happen, the solar scientists have a field day because then they can observe flares and such-like phenomena when the eclipse blocks the intense light from the main part of the solar disk.
