No, it's not just you. It might have been going on before around 2005, but that's when I first noticed it, some days an actual massive checkerboard. I went around pointing it out to people, getting different reactions, from derision ("Get help." And my response to those middle-aged stylish hipsters: "All outside, not inside.") to acknowledgment from other aware pedestrians, to an Asian national thanking me profusely.
