Attorney General Jeff Sessions announces grants for Kansas to fight drugs, violent crime

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KWCH) U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions traveled to Kansas Friday afternoon to talk about violent crime in Kansas.

Sessions spoke at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson. He addressed the increase in crime nationwide and announced grants from the Department of Justice to help deter it.

Sessions highlighted the fact that much of the violent crime stems from the growing opioid crisis. He said Cowley County is set to receive $400,000 to support its drug courts and fight the crisis.

Sessions said grant funding will go towards drug testing, rehabilitation programs, medication-assisted treatment and the addition of two staff members.

He said the hope is to prevent repeat offenders by providing help to those with addictions.

"We are going after the traffickers but we want to provide an opportunity for those who are addicted or in trouble with drugs to recover and maybe change their lives," said Sessions. "It's not easy. People think you can simply send someone who's addicted to these powerful drug treatments for a few weeks and they'll be fixed forever. It's just not so."

Sessions also announced $100,000 for the Wichita Police Department to purchase 67 new body cameras. He Kansas City will receive $700,000 to continue its crime reduction efforts.

Take my Trump Tower apartment instead of my money, Manafort tells Mueller

Former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort told prosecutors he preferred that they seize his apartment in Trump Tower than give up one of the four bank accounts special counsel Robert Mueller's team was eyeing, court papers showed Friday.

Manafort is surrendering an estimated $46 million worth of cash and real estate as part of his plea deal.

The longtime Republican operative also agreed to cooperate with Mueller's investigations into possible collusion by President Donald Trump's campaign with Russians who interfered in the 2016 election.

Robert Mueller may have just eliminated one of Trump’s biggest complaints!

It’s not just that the investigation by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III is, in President Trump’s estimation, a biased partisan “witch hunt." No, that’s just one small aspect of why Trump is frustrated by Mueller’s work.

There’s Trump’s worry that the probe “endangers our country,” as he told reporters on Air Force One last week. Why? Because it is “hard for us to deal with other countries” because of it.

And then there’s the cost. In June, he took issue with the cost as reported by Mueller’s team.

A.P. has just reported that the Russian Hoax Investigation has now cost our government over $17 million, and going up fast. No Collusion, except by the Democrats!
