Above redditfugee posted a really intriguing twat dtd Sep 6. MightyCassandra took the NYT Op-Ed that caused such a furor and ran it through turnitin.com, which is software that checks for plagiarism. Key wording from the NYT: "The Times today is taking the rare step of publishing an anonymous Op-Ed essay." Note the wording "essay."
To make a long story short, it looks like a student from USC wrote the essay that was then quickly forwarded to the NYT (perhaps by the professor?). It was a 100% match! Per MightyCassandra, "The student essay included the entire Op-Ed. Not an excerpt, not a quote. The whole piece NYT essay with one sentence revised."
Think about the timing. If the NYT wrote the Op-Ed themselves, and the student then turned in the essay to the prof, who then ran it through the turnitin program, it would be IMMEDIATELY flagged as plagiarism and the university would rain down its wrath. BUT, if the student originally wrote the essay and someone sent it to the NYT, then nobody would know until somebody like MightyCassandra ran it through turnitin.
So did the NYT get pranked by a USC student?

Here's a podcast of Michael Barbaro interviewing James Dao, Op-Ed editor for the NYT. Still keeps anonymity.
