Dave Murphy: Will Monsanto's Loss Result In Less Poison In Our Food?

In November 2016, a very concerning report – Glyphosate: Unsafe On Any Plate – was released by The Detox Project and Food Democracy Now!, raising the alarm of the high levels of glyphosate in the US food supply and the (deliberate?) low levels of awareness of its associated health risks.

Soon after its release, we brought Dave Murphy, executive director of Food Democracy Now!, on the podcast to explain the explosive findings within this report on the world's most-used herbicide (more commonly known by its retail brand: Roundup). We asked: Are we being poisoned in the pursuit of profit?

As happened in past decades with the alcohol and tobacco industries, the glyphosate report added compelling evidence that profits have indeed taken a priority over consumer safety in our food production system – and as public health concerns mounted, Big Ag started circling its wagons and attacking the questioners rather than embracing open scrutiny.

But last month, the tables turned. In a landmark upset ruling, Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller was ruled to be carcinogenic, and the company's attempt to hide this fact from consumers made it guilty of acting “with malice or oppression”. Monsanto's new parent company Bayer was ordered to pay the plaintiff, a former school groundskeeper now dying of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, $289 million in damages.

Rudy Giuliani Throws Cold Water On The Left: Manafort’s Guilty Plea Is ‘Irrelevant’ to Trump Probe

Many people on the left are positively giddy over the news that Paul Manafort is now cooperating with the Mueller probe but in truth, they have no real reason to be happy. Manafort’s admissions of guilt have nothing to do with the Trump campaign. Rudy Giuliani reminded people of this on the Hannity show last night.

The FOX News Insider reports:

Giuliani: Manafort’s Guilty Plea Is ‘Irrelevant’ to Trump Probe

Rudy Giuliani said Friday on Hannity that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s guilty plea meant nothing when it comes to the president and allegations of collusion.

Manafort will be able to avoid a second trial with his plea, which also involves cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Giuliani said the real collusion is “that whole group of people — Strzok, Page, Ohr, Ohr’s wife, Comey, Brennan and Clapper” tried to keep President Trump out of the White House.

“The guilty pleas are all irrelevant,” Giuliani said.

Iran Slams French Police for Slow Response to Kurdish Activists' Embassy Attack

Iranian Kurdistan supporters attempted a forceful entry to the country’s embassy in Paris closely on the heels of Iranian military command firing a range of missiles at a location of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan in the north of Iraq.

Iran accused pro-Kurdish activists of attacking its embassy in Paris on Saturday and lambasted French law enforcement for arriving too late to the scene.

According to a report by Fars News Agency, around 15 Kurdish activists burned the Islamic Republic’s flag on Friday and smashed a number of windows with stones. Despite going still further to throw fire extinguishers and computers at the entrance gate, the activists did not manage to enter the building.

Addressing the incident, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi complained about the French police failing to arrive duly to the scene, adding that “the assailants were members of a terrorist organization,” he said, as quoted by the state news agency IRNA, adding that some of the attackers were subsequently arrested.

The embassy attack follows shortly after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards fired as many as seven short-range missiles last week at a gathering of the Iranian Kurds (the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan) in northern Iraq. Separately, according to Nedaa, Iran carried out the death sentence on Saturday against three Kurdish political activists, having accused them of nti-revolution and “terrorist” acts in light of the overall unrest in the country. UN reports also had it previously that the activists in question had been subjected to torture and isolation before the execution.

Kurds, being active in Iran, have been a stumbling block in French-Iranian relations in recent months, with Tehran denouncing France’s support for Kurdish units, namely the DPIK, labelled by Tehran as a terrorist organization. France has meanwhile already instructed its diplomats to postpone indefinitely non-essential trips to Iran, citing Tehran’s tough attitude to France, despite the European country being one of the strongest vocal supporters of the landmark 2015 P5 +1 nuclear deal between Iran and other states, which US President Donald Trump notoriously withdrew from on May 8.

Bill Clinton Calls for ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban Day After Man Kills Five with Handgun

Bill Clinton called for an “assault weapons” ban the day after a man shot and killed five people in Bakersfield, California, with a handgun.

Clinton did not mention the Bakersfield shootings, but it certainly stands as an immediate example of how ineffectual an “assault weapons” ban would be at curtailing the evil of mankind.

A few things must be noted here. First, the “assault weapons” ban did not ban “assault weapons.” Rather, it stripped them of certain cosmetic features, such as flash hiders and collapsible stocks, among other things. But it was 100 percent legal to buy an AR-15 during the “assault weapons” ban.

Secondly, there has not been any proof the ban reduced crime. The Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice (NIJ) made this clear. As the ban ended in 2004, the Washington Times quoted University of Pennsylvania Professor Christopher Koper, author of an NIJ report, saying, “We cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation’s recent drop in gun violence. And, indeed, there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence.”

One of the reasons for the predictable failure of “assault weapons” bans is that rifles of any kind, and “assault weapons” specifically, are not weapons of choice for criminals.

For example, FBI crime stats show that more than four times as many people were stabbed to death in 2016 as were shot and killed with rifles of any kind. And on May 30, 2018, Breitbart News reported a Rockefeller Institute of Government study showing that mass shooters chose handguns over “assault weapons” by a margin of three to one during the 50 years spanning 1966-2016.

And let us not forget, Clinton’s call for an “assault weapons” ban comes the day after a California man killed five people with a handgun.

Colombia – OAS Considers Military Intervention In Venezuela

The extended family of Venezuelan dictator Mr. Nicolas Maduro should by now be transferring all their accounts to Switzerland as this is the second warning of possible looming military intervention in a week.

This time around, the Organisation of American States’ head, Mr. Luis Almagro claimed that, after visiting and speaking to Venezuelan refugees in Colombia (and meeting with President Ivan Duque), the international community should consider ‘all options’.

His words come exactly one week after it was revealed that the Trump administration had held a meeting with disgruntled Venezuelan officers wanting support for a ‘coup’.

The Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Mr. Luis Almagro stated clearly that a "military intervention" to "overthrow" Nicolas Maduro's cannot be ruled out.

Mr. Almagro made the remark whilst visiting the Colombian city of Cucuta (a border city that has borne the brunt of the Venezuelan refugee crisis fleeing to Colombia). In neighboring Brazil, violence at the border between resident Brazilians and fleeing Venezuelans is also causing a lot of problems.

The chief of the Washington-based OAS said that the regime of Mr. Maduro in Caracas was clearly committing "crimes against humanity" on its people and therefore "with regards to a military intervention aimed at overthrowing the regime of Nicolas Maduro, I think we should not exclude any option."

"The international community is responsible and cannot allow the existence of dictatorship in Venezuela, a dictatorship that affects the stability of the entire region."

A military intervention in Venezuela, which many assume would be done by its neighbors Colombia and Brazil with US support, would be unprecedented. In the past 50 years, the South American region has not seen two nations wage a full-scale war against each other.

It is to be expected that if Mr. Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing conservative candidate of the Brazilian elections, would secure the presidency next month, then the risk of a military intervention to depose the Maduro regime by Brazil and Colombia would seriously increase.

Texas State Board of Education airs plan to remove Hillary Clinton from social studies curriculum

The Texas State Board of Education is planning to remove a curriculum requirement to teach high school students about Hillary Clinton’s role as the first woman nominated for president by a major political party, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Under other preliminary approvals, the social studies curriculum would no also longer require students to learn about 1964 Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater and Hellen Keller, a disability rights advocate who became the first deaf and blind person to graduate from college.

The proposed removal of Clinton, Goldwater, and Keller sparked little discussion among board members on Friday. Several dozen people who addressed the board earlier in the week also showed virtually no interest in these proposed changes, according to the report.

Under the state’s curriculum, elementary or high school students are required to learn about Clinton, Goldwater, and Keller — and others — in lessons on “good citizenship.” But committee members recommended the three be removed to save teachers “several minutes of instruction time,” and “remove irrelevant information,” the report stated.

How was she ranked?

Curriculum committees reportedly use a formula to determine the importance of various figures in relationship to the social studies curriculum. Among the areas measured were influence, impact on underrepresented groups and whether the figures represent diverse perspectives, according to the report.

Clinton scored a five on 21 measurements. Goldwater earned zero and Keller had seven, the report explained.

A committee had recommended removing the late evangelist Billy Graham, but reinstated him with direction from the board in June. Graham received four points.

“Keep in mind that whether Clinton and Keller or the Alamo defenders are in the standards specifically doesn’t mean students won’t learn about them,” Dan Quinn of the left-leaning Texas Freedom Network, told the board. “Teachers and textbooks can and will still teach about them. But focusing on disagreements over those details obscures the important problem that the board isn’t even getting the big ideas right because they’re more interested in using the standards to promote their personal and political beliefs.”

The committees were comprised of teachers and other educators nominated by the board. Earlier this year, they were asked to reduce the volume of social studies content given to the state’s 5.4 million public school students.

Concerns have been raised in the past that the board allows both liberal and conservative bias to play into what is taught about historical events such as the Civil War and the founding of the United States, the newspaper reported.

What’s next?

The state board is continuing to take public comments on the proposed curriculum changes until November.
