Syrian Army Neutralizes Another Group Of Militants In Northwestern Idlib And Northern Hama

On September 16, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) neutralized a group of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) fighters who were on their way to a front line near the city of Jisr al-Shughur in the northwestern part of the governorate of Idlib, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Furthermore, the SAA artillery shelled a position of HTS near the town of al-Lataminah in the northern Hama countryside. As a result, several militants were killed and injured.

According to the SANA, thousands of militants of HTS, Jaysh al-Izza, the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) and other radical groups operate in the northern Hama countryside and the western Idlib countryside, where hundreds of thousands of civilians live.

US-backed Forces Advance Inside Al-Baghuz Al-Fawqani In Euphrates Valley

(SDF) advanced in the main street inside the town of al-Baghuz al-Fawqani, in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside, and captured 4 positions from ISIS terrorists, according to the SDF’s media center.

US-backed forces also attempted to advance in the nearby town of al-Susah and clashed with ISIS fighters. However, no significant advance was made there.

Warplanes of the US-led coalition conducted three strikes on positions inside the ISIS-held pocket. Furthermore, the coalition M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launched five heavy rockets at fortifications of the terrorists group.

UK Police Seal Off Restaurant in Salisbury After 2 People Taken Ill - Reports

Two people fell ill after eating in a restaurant in Salisbury, Reuters reported Sunday.

"Police were called by the ambulance service to Prezzo, High Street, Salisbury at 6.45 pm today following a medical incident involving two people — a man and a woman," a Wiltshire Police statement was quoted by Reuters. "As a precautionary measure, the restaurant and surrounding roads have been cordoned off while officers attend the scene and establish the circumstances surrounding what led them to become ill," Wiltshire Police said.

Former Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with what London claimed was an A234 nerve agent in Salisbury in early March. On July 4, two people were poisoned in the city of Amesbury, allegedly with the same nerve agent, which left one UK woman dead. UK authorities have accused Russia of orchestrating the attacks, but Moscow has repeatedly denied any involvement.

On Thursday, the RT broadcaster released an interview with Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, alleged Skripal poisoining suspects, in which the men refuted involvement in the Skripal case, saying that they had no relation to the Russian military intelligence service (GRU) and had been visiting the United Kingdom as tourists.

German Defense Minister Calls for Longer Mandate for Its Military in Iraq

German troops are currently tasked with training the Middle Eastern country's military, as well as the Kurdish Peshmerga, to counter the remnants of terrorist forces.

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen has urged for a long-term mandate for the country's troops deployed in Iraq, Deutsche Welle reported. She justified the move by saying that despite the fact that Daesh* has suffered significant defeat in Iraq, it still has an "ideological foothold."

"The fight against IS has left behind deep wounds and scars in the country. It takes patience for these scars to heal and for Iraq to become strong," she said.

The current mandate for German troops' stay in Iraq, issued by the country's parliament, the Bundestag, expires on October 31. It is expected to be prolonged, but the idea faces backlash from members of the Social Democratic Party, who are a part of the ruling coalition along with Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Party and Seehofer's Christian Democratic Union.

German forces in Iraq are tasked with training the country's troops in logistics, paramedic training and defusing explosive devices. Also, roughly 150 German soldiers are tasked with training Kurdish forces — the Peshmerga.

Mass Stabbings in Luton, UK Leave Several Seriously Injured - Reports

Several people have been taken to hospital with serious stab wounds after a mass brawl in a residential street in the southeastern UK town of Luton, Reuters reported Sunday.

According to media reports, local police and emergency services had responded to the scene after receiving reports of an incident. "Some people have been taken to hospital after reports of stab wounds," local police official was quoted as saying by Reuters.

According to the Daily Mirror, an eyewitness who works in a takeway in the area of the incident said he saw at least two young men about 18-20 years old left bleeding in the street following a huge brawl. Bedfordshire Police tweeted that seven people were injured in the incident.

Amazon Employees Investigated Over Suspected Black Market For Information, Favors

Amazon has launched an investigation to track down a sophisticated network of employees running a "black market" of confidential information and favors, illegally sold through intermediaries to site merchants in order to give them a competitive advantage over other sellers, reports the Wall Street Journal.

n addition to providing sales metrics, search keywords and reviewers' email addresses, bribed Amazon employees would delete negative feedback for around $300 per review, with middleman brokers typically demanding a five-review minimum from merchants looking to game the system.

Employees of Amazon, primarily with the aid of intermediaries, are offering internal data and other confidential information that can give an edge to independent merchants selling their products on the site, according to sellers who have been offered and purchased the data, brokers who provide it and people familiar with internal investigations.

In exchange for payments ranging from roughly $80 to more than $2,000, brokers for Amazon employees in Shenzhen are offering internal sales metrics and reviewers’ email addresses, as well as a service to delete negative reviews and restore banned Amazon accounts, the people said.

Amazon is investigating a number of cases involving employees, including some in the U.S., suspected of accepting these bribes, according to people familiar with the matter. -WSJ

The data brokers primarily operate ion China, as the number of new Amazon sellers in the country has been skyrocketing. The Journal speculates that "Amazon employees in China have relatively small salaries, which may embolden them to take risks."

Considering that Amazon employees in the US are some of the most poorly paid in tech and retail (Jeff Bezos was recently booed by his own employees over low wages), perhaps the WSJ's theory holds water.

Iran FM Warns of Uranium Enrichment Unless EU Props Up National Economy

The Iranian foreign minister once again called on the European Union to act to compensate Iran for its economic losses at the hands of US sanctions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned that Tehran could move to increase uranium enrichment if the EU does not take action in regard to Washington's unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the administration of US President Donald Trump in May ditched the treaty signed by the US, China, Iran, Russia and other EU nations and began to re-impose economic sanctions lifted earlier by the Obama administration.

"The Europeans and the other signatories must act in order to compensate for the effects of the US sanctions," Zarif told Der Spiegel on Saturday, once again reiterating Iran's position toward the unilateral action by the White House.

Zarif underscored that Iran does not seek to abandon the deal, but could resort to partial or reduced implementation of the agreement.

Iran's foreign minister rejected the possibility of direct talks with Trump unless Washington returns to the agreement.

Tehran Vice President Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, announced Tuesday that his government had notified the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of its plans to build a new facility for producing next-generation centrifuges to enrich uranium, the Washington Post reported.

Salehi pointed out that in doing so, Tehran would not be in violation of the JCPOA. According to the text of the agreement, Tehran is not prohibited from producing centrifuge parts, but cannot put them into operation until 2025. Should the nuclear deal crumble, Iran will order centrifuges to be assembled, he said.

At high enough levels of processing, enriched uranium can be used as a component for a nuclear weapon. Tehran, in repeatedly denying that the nation sought to build and stockpile nuclear weapons, has been observed to have scrupulously followed the letter of the 2015 JCPOA agreement.

The move, however, became a pretext for earlier sanctions against the country by the Trump White House.
