They are, I used to breed them. A friend of mine who was in the Vietnam war said they used to step on them in their natural habitat. Not on purpose, they were just there. They have to have stagnant water to breed. And if you don't remove the female after she has released all her eggs, she will go after the male, kill him, and then eat the eggs
