Jenifer Lewis, who plays Ruby on ABC’s Black-ish, wore Nike sneakers and a bedazzled Nike top on the Emmys red carpet Monday night, to show support for Colin Kaepernick. The sportswear company recently revealed Kaepernick as the face of its latest campaign, over the slogan, “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.” Given that Kaepernick has been a lightning rod since he first started kneeling before football games to protest police brutality, it went over the way you would expect.

 

“I am wearing Nike to applaud them for supporting Colin Kaepernick, and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality,” Lewis told Variety on the red carpet. Lewis came up with the idea while swimming, and figured she’d wear Nike to say, “Thank you. Thank you for leading the resistance. We need more of corporate America to stand up. These are not dark times. These are awakening times, and we all have to wake up.”
