On this day in 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia. It would give Congress the power to provide for the punishment of three federal crimes and defined just one of them:
Treason.

Today, 18 USC §2381 still makes it a federal crime for a person owing allegiance to the United States to levy war against the country, or adhere to the country's enemies, giving them aid and comfort in the U.S. or elsewhere.
