I suspect his job is to rub some of the truth in our faces mixed with just enough disinformation.
I read Angels and Demons years ago, underground tunnels, evil churchmen sacrificing people. Lots of truth there it turns out, but made to seem fantastic so no one would actually believe it - and if you saw the truth in it, other people woudl call you crazy.
