I've had a strong distrust of the medical establishment since a very young age. It's only grown stronger over the years probably fortified by a generalized hate of going to the doctor.
If you ever take natural childbirth classes (not the ones offered by the hospital) you are introduced to the stark reality of how heavily medicalized the entire process has become. It is in the interest of the doctor's pocketbook to include as many interventions as possible regardless of the outcome. The doctor is incentivized to get the mom to agree to a cesarian somehow. How can you trust your care under those circumstances?
In the birthing classes i took we were encouraged to resist drugs. You are very vulnerable when you are in labor so when you are drugged you have already agreed to place yourself at the mercy of your doctor. But what many women don't realize is that there is a cascade effect. Once you agree to an epidural, your chances of 'needing' additional interventions increases tremendously.
I was blessed to have quick labors (3 total) and the doctors did not have time to give me anything but i know plenty of healthy moms who consented to drugs and wound up with cesarian sections. In their minds the doctor was a hero who saved the baby but who's to say the problem wasn't caused by the drugs.
