OK, WAIT. LOOK AT THIS. This appears to me to be a collection of reports from alarmed field officers from different parts of the country appealing to Hoover to do something about this book, deemed by law enforcement to be VERY dangerous and concerning. They include local newspaper articles about the book and background investigation information on both the author and publisher (Bergman, also the book's preface writer) which includes the publisher's communist history. It appears Hoover either writes to the field officer that they [the FBI] do not control what is written in the press, etc or stonewalls persistent officers by asking for further info or clarification.
Historyfags and commiefags please read this and tell us if what we are witnessing here are the beginnings of a new brand of socialism brought to the USA and planted to grow.
It's interesting to note after reading through this a bit, that FBI field officers, often after being alerted by local police officials, quickly began to hone in on the man who wrote the preface to and published the Anarchist Cookbook, Peter Maury "Maurice" Bergman. Note that a first year university student gets the writer's credit. Nothing to see here...
Bergman was born in Austria and moved to Germany with his family in 1914 after the outbreak of WWI. He attended the School of Economics at Berlin University until 1934. During this time he helped organize a political group called "New Beginning" which opposed Nazism and worked toward a socialistic government in Germany.
He was arrested in 1937 by the Gostapo for espionage and treason for these activities as well as working with various underground trade union groups. Bergman admitted he had appealed to German manufacturing workers to slow down production and disrupt Nazi economic machinery, but committed no treason, espionage or acts of violence.
Here's where it gets interdasting. Until Dec 1937 he's held by the Germans when charges are dropped and he's deported to Czechlosloyakia. Again, not unusual AT ALL. From there he passed through a number of countries finally stopping in Stokholm where he remained until March 1941. He arrived in San Pedro, CA, USA on April 12, 1941 via Russia and Japan where he was granted entry a permanent resident as a Jewish refugee. It's later uncovered he filed a petition for second paper (for US Citizenship) in 1951 where his status was listed as "stateless." (pgs 35-36) Wtf?
Pg. 37 It gets disturbing. Bergman permanently takes up residence in NYC in Dec of 1943. He establishes the Polygot Press in 1948.
Bergman is a self-described "Orthodox Marxist" and believes in revolution, if necessary, to carry out reform of governments. He basically states his beliefs differ from Stalinism and Trotskyism because they create totalitarian super-states rather than "an emergence of a working class as ruling class." He claims he is anti-communist as well as anti-Soviet.
