UN Report Calls for Genocide Charges Against Myanmar’s Military Leaders

A 444-page United Nations report released Tuesday said Myanmar's generals should be prosecuted for genocide for their actions toward the country's Rohingya minority.

The UN team said that Myanmar's military tactics had been “consistently and grossly disproportionate to actual security threats,” leaving 10,000 Rohingya Muslims dead and driving about 700,000 across the border to Bangladesh.

The report also contains satellite images, interviews with victims and photographs of wounds on survivors. One of the examples presented in the report described a coordinated attack carried out by Myanmar's navy and army on the seaside village of Koe Tan Kauk. It describes soldiers slaughtering villagers with knives and burning the community to the ground. The report claims there are reasonable grounds to believe that the violent actions in Myanmar were committed with the intention to destroy the stateless Rohingya nation, and it urged the UN General Assembly to levy charges of “genocide” against the perpetrators.

Marzuki Darusman, a former attorney general of Indonesia and head of the UN fact-finding mission on Myanmar, said that the country's military leadership should be removed. “I have never been confronted by crimes as horrendous and on such a scale as these,” he said in a statement.

The UN report was presented at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Myanmar representative to the UN Kyaw Moe Tun called the report “one-sided” and “flawed.” Myanmar's army also has denied any misconduct and excessive use of force, insisting its campaign was justified by the need to root out Rohingya insurgents who staged deadly raids on Myanmarese border posts in August 2017.

GOP Lawmakers Laud Trump’s Order to Declassify FISA Docs

President Trump’s order to declassify a slew of documents Monday regarding the FBI’s warrant to spy on an American citizen and the bureau’s handling of the investigation into alleged collusion between Trump and Russia is being hailed by Republican lawmakers as a major step in “transparency.”

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant used by the FBI to monitor short-term campaign volunteer Carter Page’s communications has been at the center of the controversy since evidence surfaced during the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation on Russia revealed that the unverified dossier compiled by former British spy, Christopher Steele, was the main body of evidence used by the bureau to obtain the warrant. The dossier was the product of now-embattled research firm, Fusion GPS, which was paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

According to lawmakers, other indicators that the FISA warrant may have been obtained under false pretenses were exposed in text messages between former Special Agent Peter Strzok and FBI Attorney Lisa Page. Page has since left the bureau and Strzok was fired earlier this year by the FBI for his actions during the investigation; including moments where they discussed communications with the media and published stories, they considered using as a ‘pretext’ to conduct more interviews of Trump campaign personnel.

Per Trump’s order, the documents to be declassified also include the full FBI interviews (called 302s) with Justice Department official Bruce Ohr, and all FBI reports of interviews that had been prepared in connection with all other applications to surveil Carter Page.

The FISA was never really about me, it was about Trump

Page told this news site Monday night after the announcement was made, “The FISA was never really about me, it was about Trump.” On Fox New’s Sean Hannity show Page said it was “so incredibly stupid to begin with.” He noted that the FBI has never questioned him about the allegations against him in the FISA document. Congressional investigators have asked for 21 pages of the 412 pages of FISA applications and warrants on Page. The Department of Justice released a redacted version of the FISA earlier this year, but lawmakers said it was not enough to show the American people what had actually taken place. The supporting documents are expected to show that a significant amount of ‘exculpatory evidence’ was withheld from the secret court in the bureau’s effort to obtain the FISA.

Kim Jong-un: Summit with Trump ‘Stabilized the Region’

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un credited his meeting in June with President Donald Trump for “stabilizing” Asia while greeting his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in on Tuesday in Pyongyang.

Kim personally thanked Moon for making the Trump-Kim meeting happen and expressed hope for “more advanced results” in talks with the United States, without elaborating on how he would define the term.

President Trump has mentioned the possibility of a second in-person meeting in the future to discuss an end to North Korea’s illegal nuclear weapons program and the White House claimed that Kim sent a letter to Trump requesting such a meeting. The first meeting, in Singapore, resulted in the signing of a declaration in which North Korea agreed to work towards the “complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” but that declaration did not define the term. North Korea has previously used the phrase to mean a removal of American assets from the region, not an end to its nuclear program.

Brennan: Wray, Coats, Rosenstein Obligated to ‘Push Back Against’ Trump’s Order to Declassify Documents

Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” former CIA Director John Brennan said government officials were obligated to “push back’ against President Donald Trump’s order to declassify documents and text messages related to the Russia investigation.

Brennan said, “Well, it is very unusual and it’s very concerning from two principle perspectives. One is that I think it is highly inappropriate and unethical for Mr. Trump to the take any action that pertains to the FBI criminal investigation of Russian collusion, and Russian — and cooperation with Russia in the election of which Mr. Trump and close associates are subjects. So that should not happen that he would be able to take such an action. He certainly has the authority to do it, but I do think it is highly inappropriate, and I think everybody who knows these issues feels similarly. Secondly, to basically order the Department of Justice and the FBI to release this information, even that which was redacted earlier, it’s really just pushing this envelope, and I think it’s making a lot of law enforcement official, Department of Justice officials and intelligence community officials very concerned about the negative impact and consequences of doing that. So, yes, he has the authority to do these things. The question though is whether or not it is the right thing to do and whether it is something that Mr. Trump is just trying to continue to find ways to get himself out of the mess that he is currently in.”

He added, “Christopher Wray, director of the FBI and Dan Coats, director of National Intelligence as well as Rod Rosenstein who is overseeing this investigation should push back against any directive that is going to have a negative impact on our capabilities as well as the investigation. So I think that they should continue to push, push, push. If Mr. Trump and the White House does not relent, then I think they have some decisions to make, whether or not they are going to the just not follow that direction and be fired or to resign. But if they really believe that this is going on to have serious impact on the national security, law enforcement, and judicial process, they have an obligation since they took the oath of office to the Constitution of the United States and not Mr. Trump to uphold their responsibilities and their agency and the departments’ authorities.”

Texas Board of Education drops Hillary Clinton from history classes

Texas educators have booted Hillary Clinton, Helen Keller and other historical figures from state social studies classes, which require students to learn about “significant social leaders in the United States.”

Clinton being the first woman to run for president and Keller’s accomplishments as a deaf and blind person apparently don’t qualify.

“Military and first responders are best represented,” the state’s Board of Education’s advisory committee recommended prior to a vote on the change Friday.

High schoolers in the Lone Star state had studied Clinton under a “citizenship” section of its curriculum, which focuses on trailblazers such as Andrew Carnegie, Thurgood Marshall and Sandra Day O’Connor, according to the Dallas Morning News.

And third-graders learned about Keller, a prolific author and political activist who earned a college degree despite her handicap.

But the board’s advisory committee determined she “does not best represent the concept of citizenship.”

At least two committee members said the group concluded that there were too many historical figures for Texas kids to study, so they graded candidates based whether they triggered a “watershed change” and if they were from an “underrepresented group,” the paper reported.

Clinton scored a 5 out of 21 points. Keller scored a 7 out of 20.

“There were hundreds of people,” said Misty Matthews, a committee member and teacher, about the volume of historical figures kids are required to learn. “Our task was to simplify… we tried to make it as objective as possible.”

There board made no specific comments about Hillary Clinton. Students are still required to learn about Bill Clinton.

Removing the former first lady and secretary of state will save teachers 30 minutes of instruction time, and axing Keller will save 40 minutes, the advisory committee estimated, according to the paper.

While Clinton and Keller were scrapped, evangelist and Baptist pastor Billy Graham – who was also recommended for removal by the committee – was spared. So were references to Moses, and his “influence” on America’s founding documents.

The board wants students to continue explaining how the “Arab rejection of the State of Israel has led to ongoing conflict” in the Middle East, a requirement the committee recommending eliminating.

The board will cast its final vote on the curriculum re-do in November.

Israeli aerial operations in violation of Syria’s sovereignty, Putin says

Russian President Vladimir Putin says the Israeli military’s aerial operations in the Syrian airspace are in flagrant violation of the incumbent Damascus government’s sovereignty as tensions are simmering between Moscow and Tel Aviv over the downing of the Russian Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft in the western Syrian province of Latakia.

“Putin pointed to the fact that the Israeli air force has been conducting operations in breach of Syria’s sovereignty. In this case, Russian-Israeli agreements on the prevention of dangerous incidents were not observed. As a result, a Russian airplane came under fire from Syria’s anti-aircraft systems. The President of Russia called for the Israeli side to avoid such situations from now on,” the Kremlin press service quoted Putin as telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone on Tuesday.
