Red Tide - Big Sugar Dig Continued

Image # 1 Red tide bloom timeline

Take note of the time span between red tide blooms. While they existed the frequency was far less during the time periods between the 16th century through 1953. Then we move into 1994 and it becomes a never ending barrage of blooms. In 2006 the National Sierra Club says it will open an office in Sarasota for the purpose of dealing with red tide as their main agenda.

Image #2 Global Red tide blooms

1903 See's the North Sea bloom for the first time..tankers from Japan and Australia are thought to have carried the blooms.

1968 Northumberland coast of England sea birds die.

1972 Red tide for the first time invades New England coasts from Maine to Cape Cod shell fish beds are closed.

1975 Hong Kong starts recording the blooms by 2005 there are 759 most harmless.

Causes and Cures

Causes blamed are any where from chemicals left over from WW2 to minerals in smoke, iron in the clouds and lest we forget global warming.

Research Cures

This begins 1974 with the first International conference held in Boston on Red Tide Blooms.

1984 Sarasota Florida holds it's first workshop for researchers and begins monitoring with Mote Marine Laboratory. 1996 Congress gives 1.5 mil in grants for research. (Not clear who gets the grant, my best guess would be Mote getting lions share) 1997 NASA puts up a monitoring satellite for detection. From this point forward the money keeps rolling. Mote Marine even puts out a submarine to study the problem, yet no solutions.

1947-1992 Most experts agree runoff tainted with fertilizers to be the problem causing the blooms. 1996 Mote Marine states there is on conclusive evidence that tainted runoff is the problem. Sierra Club states that pollution is the problem.

In all most experts agree that fertilzers in the the runoff of waters is the primary blame. In Florida the worlds largest sugar crop is around the Okeechobee Lake, over the years the directional flow of runoff has been altered where it now reaches the Gulf. These large agriculture companies have been allowed to bybass rules that other people have to follow. Governments leaders are aware of the problem but have done nothing to remedy as it is a 1 billion dollar problem.
