The point is to make the documents public. I'm sure POTUS could see the unredacted if he wanted to, and probably already has. It's about declassifying.
POTUS can't be indicted for wrongly declassifying stuff, as far as I understand that is. He can be impeached, but that's another shit show, and if the info brings them down I don't think anyone would want to move on that anyway lest they be implicated as well.
Pretty sure it could blow back on Sessions, so yeah, I think the 'show' thing is right.
